Understanding Your Student Loan Servicer

Your Student Loan Servicer

Federal student loans are financed by the federal government, which acts as your lender. After your loan has been disbursed, a student loan servicer will oversee your repayment on behalf of the lender.

The servicing company will:

  • Handle the billing and process your loan payments.
  • Answer questions about your loans and help you explore different repayment options.
  • Assist with requests like deferment or forbearance if you're facing financial hardship.

In short, your loan servicer is your primary point of contact for any questions or issues related to repaying your student loans.

Know who your loan servicer is? If not, here’s how you can find their name and contact information:

  • Log in to your account at StudentAid.gov using your StudentAid.gov account username and password.
  • Navigate to your dashboard or the "My Aid" section.
  • You should find a section detailing your loan servicer information, sometimes titled "My Loan Servicers".
  • Alternatively, you can contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center (FSAIC) at 1-800-433-3243.
  • Or use this link: https://studentaid.gov/manage-loans/repayment/servicers#my-servicer.

It's important to remember that you may have more than one loan servicer, especially if you have both federal and private loans. If you're having trouble repaying your loans or have questions, it's best to contact your servicer as soon as possible to discuss your options.
